4 Easy Gifts For Mom

0

Mother’s Day is right around the corner and, if you’re like me, you have no desire to buy her the same store-bought card and gifts that every mom gets. I spent the day making some handmade Mother’s Day gifts that are a bit of an upgrade from the macaroni picture frame of last year. Here is a quick overview of a what I came up with – let us know if you have any other awesome ideas for Mom!

1) Etched wine glass

Ingredients:

Wine glass: $1

Decal vinyl: $0.35

Armour All Etching Cream: $6.36 on amazon

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Etch time: 5 minutes

Mom happiness level: Wine

Mom deserves a break. This is a super easy and affordable project with only a few steps! Create a simple design in your software- I simply typed out “Mommy’s Sippy Cup.” Keep in mind that you want your font to be thick enough to be legible on the glass. You also want to make sure the height and width of the design fit on the tapering of the wine glass. We are basically making a mask with decal vinyl from which to etch, so the vinyl must be able to lay flat on the glass. I made the design around 2-inches wide.

Once you have your design set, cut it in decal vinyl. Don’t forget: we do not mirror decal vinyl when we cut it! Next, we are going to weed out the design itself, so weed out all of the letters.

Use application tape to stick the vinyl to the glass, being careful to not leave any wrinkles or bubbles- the etching cream will seep into any cracks and will etch everything it touches!

Once the decal is applied, use a knife to spread a thick layer of etching cream onto the glass. Try to make your cream an even thickness for even etching. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then rinse in a sink. Be careful not to get any etching cream on your hands, as the chemical in it will try to …well… etch your hand. Take off the decal vinyl and you are all finished!

2) Foiled Card

Ingredients:

Card Stock: All good crafters have this in their pantry

Laser printer: Don’t have one? Have your local Staples print for you 🙂

TRW Magic Foil: $10-$14 per 25 ft roll (we’ll use about 6” here)

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Press time: 5 seconds per color

Mom happiness level: results may vary

This year, don’t let Hallmark get all the credit. This card project is easy but looks elegant.

Again, I just created a simple design using design software and printed it using a laser printer on some card stock. I did a two-color press, here, so I only printed one color.

Place foil color side up and run it through either your Minc foiling machine, a laminating machine, or simply press it for about 5 seconds with a heat press. Once it cools, remove the foil and run it back through the printer, printing the second color.

Finally, run it through your preferred heating method a second time with your second color foil, wait for it to cool, peel, and you are all set. Fold the card in half, write some emotional mushiness inside, and you are all done.

3) Rhinestone Flower Vase

Ingredients:

Glass Vase: $1

Bling Anything Material: $5.85

Varied Rhinestones, SS6: $2.71

Acrylic hot fix transfer tape: $0.75

2 ft Magic Flock: $12.00

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Stone Brushing time: 5 minutes

Press time: 3-5 seconds for HTV, 15 seconds for rhinestones

Mom happiness level: Extra Christmas presents this year

With a few more products and an inexpensive glass vase, you’ll make something Mom will keep on the table all year. Use a clear, non-tapered vase for this project.

Create a rhinestone transfer just like you would for apparel. I wanted to add a little extra shine here, so I added a heat transfer vinyl backing behind the diamond area of the design.

Press the HTV to the shiny side of the Bling Anything material first, then press the rhinestone transfer. Cut around the edges. You are now left with a rhinestone decal that is easy to peel and stick to your vase.

4) Shadow Box

Ingredients:

Shadowbox: $7 (always use your 40% off coupon for these at Michael’s)

FDC Decal Vinyl: $1.18 for a 5” design

Vinyl Decal Application Tape: $0.75

Cardstock: $1.00 (but seriously, you should really be stocked up on this!)

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Application time: 2 minutes

Press time: 3-5 seconds for HTV, 15 seconds for rhinestones

Mom happiness level: This will replace any pictures of your siblings on the mantle.Take that, Tina!

Check out this easy SVG on our website. Using this pre-made design makes this shadowbox project a breeze! Simply mirror the design, cut it in FDC Decal vinyl, and place it on the inside mirror of the frame. Usually, you never mirror decal vinyl, but remember, we are placing the design on the back of the glass rather than the front. Once you have applied your decal vinyl, add a cardstock backing to the frame for a more 3-dimensional, colorful look.
These designs may be geared for Mother’s Day, but you can easily change the text to fit any occasion. Plus, doesn’t Mom deserve recognition year-round? Get crafting and show her you care.
